The inaugural Alchemy brings together 18 prominent artists from our local pool of talent. While some of the works featured are true to the trademark styles of certain artists, others mark something of a transformative period in their careers. Offering us a glimpse into the evolution and innovations of their upcoming series of works, we are privy to the next chapter of their practices.
The artists are Adam Phong, Amir Mansor, Amsyar Ramly, Arif Fauzan, Edroger Rosili, Fauzulyusri, Fazrin Abd Rahman, Fendy Zakri, Fuad Arif, Hisyamuddin Abdullah, Ho Mei Kei, Khabir Roslan, Najib Ahmad Bamadhaj, Nazhan Fikri, Ong Cai Bin, Sabri Idrus, Syed Fakaruddin, and Zulkifli Lee.
Alchemy was a medieval forerunner of chemistry and speculative philosophy aimed at changing ordinary metals into gold and curing diseases. Today, it acts as a metaphor to describe efforts and ideas revolving around discovery, creation, and transformation that appear seemingly magical. Ranging across emerging to established names, this exhibition showcases works that are as unique and diverse as our multiracial country. In creating their own worlds and realities to share their ideas and perspectives, the essence of this magic exists in the spirit of individuality and growth present in SARENG Gallery’s very first group exhibition.
